Prayer is talking with God. In order to live in relationship with God we have to pray, to talk with Him. Jesus' disciples once asked, "Lord, teach us to pray." Jesus' answer was, "Father, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation." (Luke 11:1-4) Jesus didn't mean that we should merely repeat the words of this prayer. That's an OK place to start, but what Jesus was giving us was a pattern for how to talk to the Heavenly Father in prayer. For example, God is our Father, so we talk to Him as our Father. He is a great God, so we recognize His greatness with "hallowed" (one of a kind, greatest of all) be your Name. Then we ask Him for our daily needs, confess our sins, and ask for help to not sin when we are tempted. Jesus gave us a pattern to guide us in prayer. What a gift!
